What Is a Standard Wheelchair — and Is It Right for You?

A standard wheelchair, also referred to as a manual wheelchair or self-propelled wheelchair, is the most widely used category of mobility aid for individuals who need consistent, reliable mobility support across a range of daily activities. Unlike transport wheelchairs — which are pushed exclusively by a caregiver and feature four small wheels — standard wheelchairs are equipped with two large rear wheels that the user can grip and propel independently, placing control firmly in the hands of the person using the chair.

Every standard wheelchair in our collection features a lightweight, cross-brace folding frame that collapses in seconds for easy transport in a car trunk, storage in a closet, or travel by plane, train, or bus. Seat widths range from narrow pediatric sizes to wide bariatric configurations, with weight capacities to match. Whether you're managing recovery from surgery, living with a long-term mobility condition, or supporting a loved one who needs a reliable daily chair, our selection covers every need and every budget — backed by our team of mobility specialists available by phone seven days a week.

How to Choose the Right Standard Wheelchair

Not all standard wheelchairs are built the same. Here are the four factors that matter most when selecting the right manual wheelchair for your needs.

💾 Seat Width & Sizing

Proper seat width is the single most important fit factor in a standard wheelchair. The seat should be approximately 1–2 inches wider than your hips when seated. Standard widths run 16", 18", and 20" — with narrow options at 14" and wide/bariatric options at 22" and above. An ill-fitting seat causes pressure sores, postural issues, and fatigue over time.

⚙️ Frame Weight & Material

Standard wheelchair frames are most commonly built from steel or aluminum. Steel frames are more affordable and highly durable but heavier — typically 35–50 lbs. Aluminum frames are significantly lighter — often 15–30 lbs — making them easier to self-propel, lift into vehicles, and manage over longer distances. If you'll be self-propelling daily, lightweight aluminum is worth the investment.

🏗 Weight Capacity

Standard wheelchairs typically support between 250 lbs and 300 lbs. Heavy-duty and bariatric standard wheelchairs are engineered for capacities of 350, 450, and 600 lbs, with reinforced frames, wider seats, and heavy-duty casters. Always select a chair rated above your actual body weight — never at the limit — to ensure frame integrity and safe long-term use.

🔢 Footrest & Armrest Configuration

Most standard wheelchairs include swing-away, removable footrests that allow for easier transfers in and out of the chair. Armrests are available in fixed, flip-back, and desk-length configurations — desk-length armrests allow the user to pull closer to tables and work surfaces. Consider how the user transfers and what surfaces they'll be working at before choosing a configuration.

Why Choose a Standard Manual Wheelchair?

Standard wheelchairs remain the most widely prescribed and purchased category of mobility aid for a reason — they deliver the right balance of independence, portability, and value for a broad range of users and living situations.

💪

True Independence

Large rear hand-rims allow users to self-propel without assistance — giving you the freedom to move at your own pace, on your own schedule, without relying on a caregiver for every trip.

🚗

Folds in Seconds

Every standard wheelchair in our collection features a cross-brace folding frame that collapses quickly and compactly — fitting easily into a car trunk, an airplane cargo hold, or a closet at home.

💰

Exceptional Value

Manual standard wheelchairs deliver reliable, long-term mobility support at a fraction of the cost of power wheelchairs — with no batteries to charge, no motors to service, and no electronics to maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about standard wheelchairs — answered by our mobility specialists.

The key difference is in the rear wheels and who propels the chair. A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels (typically 24") with hand-rims that allow the user to self-propel independently. A transport wheelchair has four small wheels of equal size and is designed to be pushed exclusively by a caregiver — it cannot be self-propelled. If the user needs to operate the chair on their own at any point, a standard wheelchair is the correct choice. If the user will always have a caregiver present and prioritizes a lighter, more compact chair, a transport wheelchair may be more appropriate.
To find your correct seat width, measure the widest point across your hips or thighs while seated and add 1–2 inches to that measurement. This gives you enough clearance without being so wide that your arms can't comfortably reach the hand-rims. The most common standard wheelchair seat widths are 16", 18", and 20". If your measurement falls between sizes, size up rather than down. When in doubt, call our specialists — proper fit is critical for comfort and long-term postural health.
Weight varies significantly based on frame material and size. Steel-frame standard wheelchairs typically weigh between 35–50 lbs — durable and economical but heavier to lift and self-propel. Aluminum-frame standard wheelchairs typically weigh between 15–30 lbs, making them significantly easier to manage for self-propulsion, vehicle transfers, and travel. If you'll be lifting the chair into a car frequently or self-propelling over longer distances, an aluminum frame is worth the additional investment.
Yes — standard wheelchairs handle low-pile carpet, hardwood, tile, and smooth outdoor surfaces well. The large rear wheels provide good traction on most indoor and paved outdoor surfaces. Deep-pile carpet and uneven terrain (gravel, grass, steep curb cuts) present more resistance and can be tiring to navigate in a standard manual wheelchair over extended periods. If the user frequently navigates outdoor terrain, consider our all-terrain mobility scooter or power wheelchair collections for a more appropriate solution.
Medicare Part B may cover a standard manual wheelchair as Durable Medical Equipment (DME) if it is deemed medically necessary by a licensed physician and prescribed for use within your home. Coverage typically applies when the beneficiary has a qualifying mobility-limiting condition and meets Medicare's face-to-face examination requirements. Coverage percentages and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan and supplemental coverage. We recommend contacting your insurance provider or Medicare directly to confirm your specific benefits before purchasing.
Standard wheelchairs are highly customizable with a wide range of accessories designed to improve comfort, safety, and usability. Popular options include wheelchair cushions (foam, gel, and air for pressure relief), anti-tippers for rear stability, lap trays and desk attachments, cup holders and pouches, elevating leg rests, seat belts and positioning belts, push handles and cane holders, and gloves for self-propulsion. Browse our accessories collection or ask our specialists to recommend the right add-ons for your specific model and needs.
Standard wheelchairs in our collection are available across a wide range of weight capacities. Standard-capacity models typically support 250–300 lbs. Heavy-duty models support 350–450 lbs, and bariatric standard wheelchairs are engineered for capacities up to 600 lbs with reinforced frames, wider seats, and heavy-duty casters. Always select a wheelchair rated comfortably above your actual body weight — never at the limit — for safety, frame longevity, and manufacturer warranty compliance.
Every standard wheelchair in our collection uses a cross-brace folding mechanism — the same industry-standard system used across most manual wheelchairs. To fold: flip up the seat cushion if present, grasp the seat upholstery at the center front and rear, and pull upward. The frame folds inward in seconds. To unfold: place the chair on the ground and press down on the seat rails until the frame locks open. Most models fit easily in a standard car trunk. For air travel, standard wheelchairs can be gate-checked at no charge under the Air Carrier Access Act.
